Behold My Favorite Thrift Store

The Dork of the Day award goes to me, because I took a camera on a flight to another city only to use it to take pictures of my favorite thrift store.

Deseret Industries is huge, in Sacramento on Auburn. I believe it’s in an old supermarket building.

Those of you who think thrift stores are small, cluttered, dingy places with ripped out-of-date clothing, think again.

Even if you are in a small town, you may periodically make Big City runs for certain items. You may want to check out the thrift stores. This one can’t be the only huge, great thrift store in the nation!!!

The pictures aren’t perfect because I felt like such a goober taking them. I’m hoping you can at least see how big, bright, clean, and organized it is.

    We are supposed to be getting a BRAND NEW Good will store up the street soon, but it is taking so long to open!! I need to get started on my Christmas shopping!!

    There's a nice Deseret Industries in Shoreline, about 3 miles north of the Seattle city limits. Good plase to find small appliances. I'm fond of the Value Villages around for clothes, and there's a nice, large, tidy, spacious Goodwill on 65th & 8th NW, with a great collection of leather bags. Funny how different thrift stores seems to specialize.

    Isn't the DI awesome!! Deseret Industries is owned and operated by the Mormon church. I live in Utah where there is one about every 10 miles. I stop by weekly to see what I can find. In Utah when people donate used goods to charity, 9 times out of 10 they give it to the DI. Some of it goes to the DI stores, some is sent to underprivilaged people around the world. Unfortunately it has the same stigma attached that I'm sure the Salvation Army store or Good Will has in other cities, but I don't care! People give away the most incredible stuff! Last week I found Sleepless in Seattle, French Kiss, Hook, Godzilla vs. Megalon, Godzilla vs. King Kong (each a dollar), a book on raising kids that I have checked out of the library 4-5 times and wanted to buy, a book on cooking soy based meat alternatives and a book on what we can do to stop global warming (each $1), a brown linen skirt from Old Navy for me ($5) and an incredibly beautiful shirt from Chicos ($3), 2 surf styles swim shirts, 2 long sleeve plaid shirts from the Gap, a Yo Gi Oh T shirt and an awesome tie dye Tee all for my oldest son. All in all I spent $35. I've decided on my own little challenge of only buying used goods until December, but mostly trying not to buy much at all. The hardest part is that my oldest (who is almost 7) is picking up that buying stuff from the DI is gross from the other kids in the neighborhood. One kid told him that he better watch out or he will get "bugs"!

    Gina: You'll never guess what I spent on Monday....$35.50! Fifty cents more! I scored a bunch of books-some for me, some presents, three items of clothing for my guy, including 2 great shirts, four shirts and a bathing suit for me, some plastic hangers, a pepper grinder, a pair of shoes (they look bever work), and some gift items. It was a mighty spree. I had a lot of time on my hands, so I tried on a lot of stuff, to see if anything outside my norm might work for me, as far as style and color. You are a lucky gal to have so many of them. PS Thanks!

    I love the DI!! I haven't gone in years because we moved and it isn't covenient. I miss going!
