Habits, My Habits

October 19th, 2006 at 04:54 am

Habits are very hard for me to change. I have a lot of good habits. I have some habits that I’m not so fond of. Changing habits is almost more difficult that what the new task is….and that’s frustrating. Persistence is the key…but if persistence was freakin’ easy, I’d have new habits already. So is it patience that’s the key?

For me, the trick is that you have to get as much pleasure out of the new good habit as you did out of the old bad habit. They'll probably be different types of pleasure, but they should be ones that motivate you.

For example, when I first started to exercise, of course exercising is not as fun as not exercising. But I was a scientist by training, so I got a lot of pleasure from treating myself as a guinea pig - learning about my muscles, learning how my metabolism reacts depending when and how I eat, learning about the "why". Here the trainer was invaluable, because she made a great sounding board. If I just went by the scale, I would have given up long ago.

and the ol' 21 day for a new habit to become a routine is true also. You dont take on and succeed at a minimum wage challenge without discipline...CLEARLY you have the discipline to tackle anything you want...just stick with it long enough that it becomes a habit or routine!!!

joesgoals.com helps me. I'm not there to daily perfection yet, but I hate having my chart dip so I am competing against myself essentially and I think I'll win. Now whether it is the 'good habit' me or the 'bad habit' me who's victorious remains to be seen.
