Walking to Work

December 7th, 2006 at 03:54 am

My Guy has been walking to work, and I’ve been a bit too. We've noticed that there is such a culture of driving that people always ask, “Need a ride?” “Car in the shop?” and the like. Clearly our co-workers are trying to be helpful, but it’s just a little funny that walking is seen as so odd. My Guy’s walk is longer, and even I fall into the trap. Mine is one mile one way, his is 2-1/2 miles on way. So on a morning I walk, I’ll say, “You can take my car today so you don’t have to walk!” What is wrong with me? Walking to and from work should be seen as lucky-lucky that a person lives so close to work. It was a little cold today, but it felt a little brisk, and I got to really wake up on the way to work.

I walk about a half mile to work, an easy, 12 minute walk. When it gets cold, though, i get lazy and take the car. Definitely a nice fringe benefit.

There's no way that I could walk to work (about 7 miles), but I do walk to appts. at a building a few doors down from us - probably 1/4 mile, at most! Every time I do, though, people who are attending the same meeting see me and ask if I want to ride with them!

I don't own a car at all and people think I must be crazy, or poor. Actually, I live a pretty comfortable life with $300 a month extra in my bank account. I live about a mile from work and usually walk in the mornings although sometimes I get my boyfriend to pick me up after work if I'm feeling lazy.

I'd love to walk to work, but it's 20mi one way so probably not happening anytime soon. When I worked summers in NYC during college, I would get a ride to the train in the morning, and walk home in the evening, about a 45min walk. There is not a lot within a reasonable and safe walking distance from my home. Hopefully when we move next year, we can pick a place with at least some ammenities within walking distance. My grandparents have several delis, a supermarket and outdoor shopping center, a train station, a park and three of the schools their children went to within a 15min walk from their house. Those were the days.
